What is Rosemaling?

Rosemaling is the decorative art of Norwegian country districts. It could be found on the walls, ceilings, and the furniture of the country houses, as well as on a great variety of smaller objects.

When did Rosemaling begin?

The oldest rosemaling in Norway is found from about the year 1700. Rosemaling reached its peak of popularity during the last decades of the 18th and the first decades of the 19th centuries.

Who were the Rosemalers?

The Rosemalers were untutored local craftsmen whose only instruction had been at the hands of itinerant artists or older rosemalers. Rosemaling had a fresh and unconventional appeal that encouraged the development of many unique local styles.

Where is Rosemaling today?

What was once a peasant art form has developed into a Norwegian national symbol with rosemalt items found in virtually every Norwegian home. Americans have embraced rosemaling as well. It is considered a creative and challenging art form as well as a way for many to continue their Norwegian heritage.
